In a statement signed by Sikiru Akinola, technical assistant (print media) to the FIRS executive chairman, the agency said the fire broke out at its office located at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5. “The fire, which broke out on the fourth floor of the building, was promptly responded to by our security personnel on duty,” the statement reads. “With the swift support of the…
The United States has placed a temporary halt on Green Card and citizenship applications linked to Nigerians. This action follows a new expansion of Washington’s immigration restrictions and affects several other countries recently added to a broader travel control policy. The suspension targets legal immigration filings, including applications for permanent residency and naturalisation. Many of those affected are Nigerians already living in the United States who were in the process of adjusting their status or applying to become citizens. Under the new directive, immigration authorities have stopped processing petitions from nationals of countries covered by the latest travel restrictions. This…
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the directive ordering the withdrawal of police officers attached to federal lawmakers. On November 23, President Tinubu ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers guarding very important personalities (VIPs) across the country. On November 26, some federal lawmakers said the president’s directive exposed them to security risks. At the joint sitting of the national assembly during the presentation of the 2026 appropriation bill on Friday, Akpabio said lawmakers had expressed concern that the directive could prevent some members from returning home safely. “As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas,…
President Bola Tinubu has warned state governors that he may issue an executive order to enforce direct allocation of funds to LGs if they fail to comply with the supreme court ruling on financial autonomy. The president issued the warning again on Friday while speaking at the 15th national executive committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House conference centre in Abuja. In a veiled reference to governors withholding statutory allocations meant for local councils, the president said non-compliance could force him to ensure direct disbursement of LG funds from the Federation Account Allocation Committee…
Wilfred Ndidi has officially been named the new Super Eagles of Nigeria captain on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The defensive midfielder takes over the reigns of steering the team forward following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the two erstwhile captains of the senior men’s national team. The 29-year-old Besiktas workhorse and vice-captain was named the national team captain on Friday after the team arrived in Morocco for the tournament and took its first training session. Speaking with the team’s media, Ndidi revealed that he has consulted with senior squad members about his new…
Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight boxer of Nigerian heritage, delivered a sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in their heavyweight bout at the Kaseya Center, Miami, in the early hours of Saturday. The 36-year-old two-time world champion recorded his 29th win in 33 professional fights with the victory. The eight-round bout, a tune-up fight for Joshua and a commercial event against the YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul, was a mismatch from the first bell. Paul danced around the ring from the start and clinched at every close contact, but the 28-year-old managed to land a few shots while Joshua looked for the big…

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court has rejected an application by Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, seeking bail from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a ruling on Thursday, Babangida Hassan, the presiding judge, said Malami’s detention was lawful and backed by a valid court order. Malami, a senior advocate of Nigeria, had approached the court through his counsel, Sulaiman Hassan, arguing that his continued detention by the EFCC in the course of an ongoing investigation was illegal and violated his constitutional right to personal liberty. The EFCC,…
