President Bola Tinubu will present the 2026 budget to the national assembly on Friday.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, read Tinubu’s letter informing the house of his intention to present the 2026 appropriation bill before the joint session of the national assembly during Thursday’s plenary.
“I write to crave the kind indulgence of the house of representatives to grant me the slot of 14:00hrs on Friday, 19 December 2025, to formally present the 2026 budget to a joint session of the national assembly,” the letter reads.
Last week, Tinubu transmitted the 2026–2028 medium-term expenditure framework (MTEF) and fiscal strategy paper (FSP) to the national assembly.
The senate passed the MTEF and FSP on Tuesday while the house of representatives stopped down the consideration of the report on Wednesday after Abbas raised reservations about the the price of the oil benchmark.
James Faleke, chairman of the committee on finance, had said the executive proposed projected crude oil benchmark prices of $64.85, $64.30, and $65.50 per barrel for 2026, 2027, and 2028, respectively, but the committee reduced them to $60 for 2026, $65 for 2027, and $70 for 2028.
The house subsequently stepped the report to resume consideration today.
