The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the 36 states received N22.90 billion as ecological fund from the federation account allocation committee (FAAC) between January and May 2025.

The ecological fund is a component of Nigeria’s federal revenue allocation designed to tackle environmental challenges such as erosion, desertification, flooding, oil spills, and drought.

It is managed by the ecological fund office under the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.

In April, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) warned that 1,249 communities in 30 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) face high flood risk this year.

Another 2,187 communities across 293 local government areas were identified as being at moderate risk.

Abia, Benue, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers and Jigawa were listed as high-risk states.

In 2024, flooding claimed 321 lives, affected more than 1.37 million people, and displaced over 740,000 nationwide.

Within the five-month period under review, Kano received the highest share with N1.29 billion, followed by Lagos with N1.09 billion and Borno with N1.01 billion.

Katsina got N997.04 million, Bauchi N970.20 million, and Oyo N909.73 million, while Bayelsa, one of the high-risk flood states, received N358.80 million.

Across geopolitical zones, TheCableIndex analysis shows that the north-west got the highest allocation with N5.85 billion, followed by the south-west with N4.59 billion and the north-east with N4.36 billion.

The south-east received N3.15 billion, the north-central N2.54 billion, while the south-south got the least with N2.40 billion.

Here is a list of the ecological funds allocations to states in five months (January – May 2025):
