Yusuf Kofarmata, commissioner of science, technology and innovation in Kano state, has resigned from his position, citing concerns about the direction of the state government.
“I cannot continue to work under a government that has derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” Kofarmata said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
The former commissioner, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), said his action was taken in good faith.
His resignation comes days after Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, formally resigned from the NNPP.
Yusuf cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” in the party as key reasons for his exit.
The governor resigned alongside 21 members of the state house of assembly, eight members of the house of representatives, and all 44 LGA chairmen in the state.
‘LEAD US INTO APC’
In December, supporters of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano and national leader of the NNPP, under the aegis of the Kwankwasiyya movement, mulled defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give their principal a “better shot” at the presidency.
Abdullahi Rogo, director general of the protocol directorate at the Kano state government house, said the planned defection was in Kano’s best interest.
Rogo added that the group had appealed to Yusuf and Kwankwaso to lead them into the ruling party.
On January 19, Yusuf met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House on January 19. On January 23, he resigned.
The NNPP expressed disappointment over the governor’s resignation, describing the move as a betrayal of the mandate given to him by voters.
