Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa, has disclosed his intention to contest for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lamido made the announcement in a post on his Facebook page on Monday.
A former minister of foreign affairs and one of the party’s founding members, Lamido said he is confident in his capacity to rebuild and reposition the PDP.
He added that he would visit Wadata Plaza, the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, to obtain his nomination form.
“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of national chairman,” he wrote.
“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable.”
The politician said his decision was inspired by the need to strengthen internal democracy and prepare the party for upcoming elections.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is expected to elect a new national chairman at its forthcoming convention.
The PDP national convention to elect new national working committee (NWC) leaders, is billed for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
In August, the PDP national executive committee (NEC) zoned its presidential ticket to the south and in line with party tradition, the national chairmanship was zoned to the north.
The position was further micro-zoned to the north-west, with former governors Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Lamido and Kabiru Turaki, ex-minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, among those rumoured to be eyeing the chairmanship role.
