CRISIS IN AFIJIO: Constituents Move to Recall Hon. Deji Oparinde Over Alleged Abuse of Power, Imposition, and Non-Performance

Tension is mounting in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State as constituents begin moves to recall their representative in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Deji Oparinde.

The embattled lawmaker is facing a growing wave of dissent over allegations ranging from abuse of power and undue interference in traditional institutions to poor performance and lack of constituency engagement.

At the heart of the controversy is a claim that Hon. Oparinde is attempting to manipulate the traditional leadership structure by lobbying for his father, the Akibio of Ilora, to be appointed as a permanent member of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

This action is reportedly in defiance of Afijio’s long-standing rotational arrangement among its three principal towns—Ilora, Awe, and Fiditi—regarding the leadership of the local traditional council.

The community consensus holds that all Obas in Afijio hold equal status and that the chairmanship must rotate equitably.

“This is not just about tradition; it’s about fairness and respect for established norms. One individual cannot override a collective agreement for personal gain,” a community leader noted.

The lawmaker is also being criticized for what constituents describe as a lack of developmental impact. Residents allege that Hon. Oparinde has failed to initiate or complete any meaningful constituency projects since assuming office.

“There are road projects facilitated by the LCDA that he now claims to be his personal achievements. It’s deceptive and unacceptable,” one of the traditional chiefs asserted.

In a further twist, Hon. Oparinde reportedly claimed that his father’s appointment was influenced by Governor Seyi Makinde.

However, stakeholders argue that such justification does not hold water and undermines the principles of local autonomy and traditional fairness.
“The recall process is already underway. Unless the Honourable member makes amends and addresses these grievances, he will be removed by the will of the people,” another source stated.

With political and traditional tensions simmering, Afijio stands at a critical juncture. The unfolding events are being closely monitored by observers and residents alike, who are demanding accountability, equity, and authentic representation from their elected officials.
